Teatro Carniglia: A Film and Panel Discussion on Jerry Carniglia

    July 13, 2017

In conjunction with the exhibit, Jerry Carniglia: A Tribute, the Museo Italo Americano together with the Western Chapter of the Italian American Studies Association will host a film and panel discussion on Carniglia’s life and work to highlight the artist’s background, philosophy, and working methods. Panelists will include Oakland artist and curator Anthony Pinata and Carniglia trustee Margaret Fisher of MAFISHCO Theatre Company. The program will begin with the screening of a short documentary film on Jerry’s creative methods and inspiration entitled Painting Rules. The film – soon to be released on DVD – was made by Emmy-nominated, award-winning filmmakers, Marylou and Jerome Bongiorno in 2008, when both they and Jerry were fellows at the MacDowell Colony, one of the country’s leading artist colonies. Audience participation will be encouraged following the film and presentations.

Alfredo Imparato: One of the last minstrels of Naples

    July 23, 2017

After great popular demand, Alfredo Imparato will return to the Museo to give two performances in July.

Mr. Imparato is one of the last wandering street minstrels, or Posteggiatori, of Naples. In 2013, he performed for enthusiastic overflow audiences at the Museo and he will be back to perform his enthralling versions of Canzoni Napoletane, or Neapolitan songs, just as he regularly does for the admiring locals in the streets and piazze of Naples.

The performance will be preceded by a short talk on the history and tradition of Neapolitan songs and i Posteggiatori by local musician Kathy Sherak.  A reception will follow both performances.

Please note there will be another performance on July 27 at 7pm, be sure you book for the correct performance.

  • Salento by 5: Travel Talk & Book Presentation

Salento by 5: Travel Talk & Book Presentation

    July 30, 2017

    SALENTO BY 5
Friendship, Food, Music and Travel Within the Heel of Italy's Boot

    Sunday, July 30 | 4:30 p.m.

Museo Italian students Audrey (The Traveler) and David Fielding (The Sketcher) collaborated with three Salentinians: Luciana (The Raconteur), Carlo (The Music Maker), and Lucia (The Cook) to write and illustrate a unique travel memoir.
After more than ten years of travel to Salento in southern Puglia, the five authors' book on the region has been published. The region comes alive with a delightful collection of stories, essays, and drawings.
Come and learn about the charm and beauty of an area of Puglia often bypassed by American tourists. Come and see the photos and drawings of the area, listen to the local "pizzica" music, and taste Salento wines!

The book and notecards will be on sale at the Museo at the beginning of July. Buy a copy in advance, bring your questions and comments to the presentation, and have it signed by authors Audrey and David.
